SCOTT Glynn's son and granddaughter led the way down a street newly named in the late fundraising legend's honour on Saturday as the annual walk he founded proved a big success once again.

The Walk With Scott Foundation’s 12th annual walk set off from Cockenzie Royal British Legion at 11am and followed a 14-mile route around Levenhall, Tranent and Seton Sands.

People of all ages and abilities joined together to take on the challenge in aid of the charity, including a six-year-old girl who completed the full distance.

The event raises money for the Walk With Scott Foundation, which was established by community fundraiser Scott Glynn MBE in 2013 to support local causes.

Scott passed away on New Year’s Day 2020 after being diagnosed with cancer but his charity has continued, and Scott’s son Gareth was amongst the group taking on the 14 miles in his father’s memory.

Along the way, the group of about 60 walkers took in the newly named Scott Glynn Walk, located on Tranent's southern edge near Windygoul Primary School.

Karen Kidd, secretary for the Walk With Scott Foundation, told the Courier: “The most special moment was Gareth and his daughter Emily walking behind the piper and leading the way along Scott Glynn Way.

“It was a very poignant moment.”

When the group made a pit stop at Meadowmill Sports Centre, Karen was thrilled to see another familiar face working behind the desk, Jack Henderson.

In 2011, when Jack was six years old, he published a book filled with his own drawings that people had commissioned him to create.

Money raised from ‘Jack Draws Anything’ was donated to Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity to support children including Jack’s brother Noah, who often had chest problems which would turn to bronchiolitis, pneumonia and other types of infections that put his life in danger.

Scott previously gave a donation of £172.48 to take Jack over his target of £10,000.

Jack, who is now 19, spent much of his childhood in Prestonpans and attended Cockenzie Primary School. As a youngster he designed the logo for Walk With Scott, which all the fundraisers were wearing.

Karen and the rest of the group were wearing t-shirts with a logo designed by a young Jack

Karen said: “It was just sheer coincidence but it was so so amazing!”

This is one of several fundraising events which have taken place this year, all raising money for Tranent-based mental health charity The Haven.

A representative from The Haven spoke to the walkers before they set off.

Karen added: “That was great, it just gives everybody a wee boost that they need to know that it’s all going to a good cause.

"It was such an amazing day and it raised so much for the charity."

After tackling the 14 miles, the fundraisers were rewarded with a well-deserved celebratory party at the finish line.

So far, the event has raised more than £2,900 for the charity and it is still open for donations at justgiving.com/campaign/walkwithscott12
