MAKING memories is key for sixth-year students at Ross High School as the newly elected head pupils look forward to the year ahead.

The leadership team comprises five students: Thomas Bull, Katie Mackenzie, Molly Nisbet, Joe Fynan-Smith and Isla Archibald.

They were selected for the role following a difficult recruitment process, including an application form and interview before delivering a presentation to the entire S6 class.

Paul Reynolds, headteacher at Ross High, said: “We’re really proud of them all.

"This was a difficult decision, given the breadth of incredible pupils we have here at Ross High; however, I am delighted with the team and wish them all the very best.”

Now the head pupils have a busy year ahead with Higher and Advanced Higher exams alongside applying for university – but they are still excited about the changes they want to make in the school too.

'Really special'

Joe, who hopes to study fashion management at university next year, said: “We’ve had a few new people join this year, so we’ve been making sure they feel really welcome.

“We also want to make sure our final year is really special and there’s loads for us to remember when we leave school.”

A Christmas dance and prom are both on the list of things to look forward to, which the leadership team are on the organising committees for, as well as a Hallowe'en disco for S1 pupils.

Katie, who is hoping to study speech and language at university, is a member of the pupil voice committee, which gives students a chance to raise their own issues by filling in a form. Pupils on the committee then work alongside teachers and school management to implement change.

The team of head pupils supported the new first years through their transition days during their final month of Primary Seven earlier in the year, and are looking out for them now that they have joined Ross High.

Molly is perfectly suited for this role as she plans to study primary teaching at university next year.

She said: “We’re there as someone to speak to, giving them support in this new environment.

“We had lots of help when we were in first year, so it’s nice to do the same thing for them.”

Thomas has his sights set on working in Formula 1, and studying mechanical engineering at university next year will be the first step to achieving this.

He keeps himself busy outside of school too and puts his musical talents to good use, last year performing with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Isla excels in the science department and is looking forward to studying chemistry at university, starting next September.

Earlier this month, all students across Scotland received the results from their recent exams and Mr Reynolds said that he was “really proud” of everyone’s achievements.

After a successful set of fifth-year exams, all five of the head pupils are now thinking ahead to Higher Education and UCAS applications.

But they are still determined to find time to enjoy their final terms at the school and make life-long memories, setting them up for a very busy and exciting year.
