AN annual open day at Gilmerton House’s kitchen garden takes place this weekend.

Growing Matters, a community and environmental-focused charity, is giving residents “an opportunity to visit this beautiful garden” on Sunday (noon to 4pm), and “see the amazing work” of its volunteers.

The walled garden was given to the charity to use by the Gilmerton Estate, near Athelstaneford.

There will be “activities for kids”, the chance to “help plan” the garden’s pond project, while also “enjoying plants and local produce” and demonstrations on willow weaving and bee-keeping.

Refreshments will also be available to purchase, and a lucky dip will be held.

The charity’s pond project at Gilmerton is supplied with water from the freshly rejuvenated original water well.

The garden recently received an ‘outstanding award’ from Keep Scotland Beautiful, whose assessor described it as a “hidden gem of a garden”.

Growing Matters welcomes volunteers on Mondays (10am-1pm) and Thursdays (1-4pm).
