AN ART exhibition with its roots in the 1960s is returning to East Linton next month.

The 56th East Linton Art Exhibition takes place in East Linton Community Hall from September 5 to 8.

The show is run annually by volunteers and raises funds for the hall.

A spokesperson for the exhibition looked back at its history and said: “The origins of the exhibition goes back to the ’60s.

“In the 1960s, East Linton’s commercial activity and population showed signs of decline, following a successful economic and social history as an important farming centre, supported by a number of mills, built along the banks of the River Tyne and the railway connection.

“To overcome this decline, the Traders Association was formed in order to raise the profile of the community.

“In 1968, the idea of an art exhibition was drawn from the village’s former popularity with artists such as Arthur Melville, Robert Noble, Martin Hardie, John Pettie (to name a few) who were natives or lived in East Linton.

“The judges for this first show were William G. Gillies and Stanley White, former and current principal of Edinburgh College of Art at the time.”

This year’s event is sponsored by Eve Foundation, McInroy & Wood, Northland, Torness Motors, Rock & Bird and Gallery27.

Prizes will be awarded on the opening night.
