A SCOUT group could be forced to close within a matter of weeks – unless new volunteers come forward.
The Pencaitland group is at risk of folding, which would leave youngsters on waiting lists for organisations in nearby Haddington and Tranent.
Now, those involved in the village are urging people to step up and help out.
A spokesperson for the group said: “If you want to ensure the future of the Pencaitland Scouts and see it thrive for years to come, we need your help.
“We urgently need new volunteers to step up and lead both Cubs and Beavers.
“Your support will not only impact the lives of young people but also contribute significantly to the growth and sustainability of our group.
“You are an integral part of our mission.
“Our Cubs and Beavers eagerly await to embark on adventures fostering their development.
“To make these adventures possible, we need adults from the community who are committed, creative and ready to inspire the next generation.”
It is not the first time the group has been struggling for leaders.
The previous Scout troop failed when the existing leaders retired and successors could not be found.
That led to a 10-year break, which meant that youngsters had to wait for a chance to join others at groups outwith the village.
The spokesperson said: “Thankfully, in 2012, a new set of volunteers stepped up to bring back life to the group and provide opportunities for the young children in the area.
“However, today, we face a critical situation.
“Without immediate action, we risk losing the group in October 2024.
“The group is in this situation because there are just two active Scout leaders left who have been running the group for many years.
“Without fresh support from parents or other volunteers and a succession plan for existing leaders to find new challenges, it will again be lost.”

The spokesperson stressed that it would be “a massive disappointment” for youngsters if the group were forced to close.
They added: “Whether you have experience in scouting or are entirely new to the movement, your unique skills, life experience and perspectives are invaluable.
“As a team, you'll help support the organisation of engaging activities, exciting games, and memorable outings that challenge, inspire and, most importantly, are fun for you, the team and our young people.
“You’ll be part of a supportive community of volunteers, receive award-winning training, and enhance your leadership skills.
“The fulfilment of seeing the positive impact you have on young lives is truly immeasurable.
“We believe every child deserves the chance to thrive and explore, and with your help, we can continue to offer exactly that.
“If you're ready to make a lasting impact and have a lot of fun, we're ready to welcome you to our team in Pencaitland.”
