“ESSENTIAL” roadworks will take place on the A1 at the beginning of next week.

BEAR Scotland will carry out the works to reinstate two weather stations near Haddington on Monday and Tuesday.

The weather stations are crucial during winter to act as sensors for ice on the road, allowing BEAR Scotland to treat it swiftly and ensure the safety of road users.

On Monday, from 7.30pm through to 6am, the A1 will be closed eastbound (southbound) between the Gladsmuir and Oaktree junctions.

A signed diversion will be in place between the two junctions and will add an additional three minutes to journey times.

The following day, the A1 will be closed westbound (northbound) between the Abbotsview and Oaktree junctions between 7.30pm and 6am the following day.

Again, a signed diversion, which is expected to add two minutes to journeys, will be in place.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s south east network manager, said: “We thank road users in advance for their patience while we carry out these essential works.

“Both weather stations were removed to allow resurfacing schemes to be carried out earlier this year and they now must be reinstated prior to winter.

“Closures of the A1 southbound and northbound are essential to ensure the safety of workers and road users.

“However, we’ve planned the diversions to minimise disruption.”

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times.

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement in the event of adverse conditions.
