A WOMAN who assaulted a police officer in Edinburgh city centre suffered broken bones in her back as she was being arrested.

Lisa Bissett confronted PC Paul Kiernan while holding a glass bottle before running away from the officer at the Capital’s Grassmarket.

The officer managed to catch up with the 33-year-old and “took hold of her arm and took possession of the bottle” at about 4.20am on May 13 last year.

Bissett was said to be shouting and swearing during the incident and attempted to punch the officer to the head but did not make contact.

She then grabbed hold of his hair and tried to pull him to the ground during the scuffle.

After being restrained on the ground, Bissett complained about suffering from back pain and had to be taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told that Bissett then spent three nights in custody in the hospital after suffering fractured vertebrae during the arrest procedure.

Solicitor Philip Moore, representing Bissett, told the court that his client had already suffered from “summary justice” and had “suffered a great deal already”.

On Friday, the mother-of-two pleaded guilty to assaulting PC Kiernan by grabbing him by the hair at Grassmarket, Edinburgh, on May 13 last year during a hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Peter McCormack sentenced Bissett, of The Promenade, Port Seton, to pay a restitution order of £300 that will go towards support services connected to Police Scotland.

Restitution orders were introduced in February 2021 and are a new financial penalty available to the courts for those convicted of assault on police officers.

The funds received will go to providing support services for victims of assaults on police officers.
