THE sun shone on the day of Susie McCabe's comedy set at Fringe by the Sea, but it could have been pouring down with rain and I still would have gone.

This was not the first time - and I am sure it will not be the last - that I had seen Susie on stage and, at her performance at the Lodge Stage, the tent almost came down (literally); and that wasn't just because of the windy weather, it was the result of her fantastic take on Glasgow's culture, humour and 'bams', with some hysterical angles on mid-life situations while being child-free.

Susie has featured on Live at the Apollo, House of Games, Have I Got News For You, Frankie Boyle’s New World Order and supported Kevin Bridges, Jason Manford and John Bishop on tour, and after the performance she delivered in North Berwick on Saturday afternoon, it is clear she still has a real talent for performing West Coast humour.

Now, I know what you're thinking, Glasgow humour and its culture, does it naturally mix well with North Berwick? Short answer: no. There were a few awkward silences, but that did that stop me and many others at the gig from laughing hysterically.

Susie is in her forties and one year ago married the woman of her dreams; she is now reminiscing on the good auld times, with many of her friends going in the opposite direction and having children.

Her show at Fringe by the Sea was all about what it is like to be child-free, having the freedoms many of her friends are without - this has led her to keep her independence and try new things, like being more healthy, shopping at Waitrose, along with a few other benefits of not being dragged down by responsibilities.

What really made the show were the anecdotes Susie told of her friends' reactions to her taking up a new lease of life.

From cutting down on the booze and attending sparkly bottomless brunches to more exercise, the gig was a spectacular hour of wittiness.

But all of these new changes Susie has introduced into her life haven't let her escape the dreaded school shows her friends' children feature in!
