PRESTONPANS Community Council has voted in support of a project to give the town’s murals a lick of paint.
The 35 murals unveiled to the public in 2006 have become a popular tourist attraction in the town, as well as a source of civic pride.
Now, there are more than 40 murals in Prestonpans, with additional ones added to the town in the past few years.
There are now plans to touch up a number of the murals in time for the 20th anniversary in 2026, with up to £20,000 being earmarked to complete the project.
At a recent meeting of Prestonpans Community Council, members discussed a number of topics and all of the attendees were in favour of supporting the project.
Tom Ewing, one of the artists involved and a long-time resident of Prestonpans, said: “Twenty years ago, we tried to paint on the walls to make them last as long as we could but, like all things, they have a certain timespan, but there has been numerous maintenance done to the murals over the years.
“Currently, we are in the process of organising to tidy up some of the murals but they do need a refresh and we are looking to pass them on to the next generation.
“We are hoping to run a survey to engage with the community and find out what they want to see because there might be a few other murals added to the trail.”
DJ Johnston-Smith, chairman of Prestonpans Community Council, said: “I thank Tom for coming along and I hope we have more murals to look at for the next 20 years.”
