A NORTH Berwick entrepreneur has come up with a blooming great way to combat carbon footprint. . . a ‘pick-your-own’ flower farm.
Fay Gourlay’s business, The North Berwick Flower Co, which opened on July 12, grows and sells seasonal British blooms from its new base next to the fairy trail at Archerfield Walled Garden, near Dirleton.
Flowers are available to pick or order as a bouquet, and Fay also offers workshops for all the family.
The mum of two said: “As a country, we import 86 per cent of our flowers.
“These have been grown all over the world, flown to the flower markets of the Netherlands and then on to us – that’s a high carbon footprint for something so small and gorgeous, and it doesn’t have to happen.
“I started The North Berwick Flower Co to show that you can have beautiful, seasonal, naturally grown flowers on your doorstep.”
Visitors are invited to wander through the flower beds to ‘pick your own’ – these can be arranged by the team before taking them home or, throughout the summer, popped into a jam jar decorated at one of the flower farm’s workshops.
Fay added: “We also have our flower bars inside our flower barn in case it rains, where you can create either dried or fresh floral displays at our studio table.”
Bouquets and posies can also be ordered for the team to make up, and collected from Archerfield Walled Garden’s car park.
The North Berwick Flower Co is open for flower picking every weekend during the summer holidays and then every other weekend until December.
