Police said that the cause of the fire was as yet unknown; they are currently making enquiries into the incident.
Morag Campbell, director of estates and facilities at NHS Lothian, said: “Extensive damage was caused to a building at the top of the site.
“Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland were both alerted, by our 24-hour security team, and attended.
“The hospital was last operational in 2010 before it closed and was put up for sale. A preferred buyer has been secured and we are working with them towards the transfer of the site.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers assisted Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with a fire at a derelict property on Edenhall Road, Musselburgh on Tuesday, August 6.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
The Scottish Ambulance Service did not attend the scene and no injuries occurred.
