AN AXE-THROWING area, rope and tyre swings, high walls, slides and a four-metre-high cargo net are among the obstacles planned for a new outdoor activity centre.
Wild Cairns will feature more than 30 obstacles spread over a one-mile course at Whitekirk Hill.
Six jobs are expected to be created at the facility, which will also include an Airsoft zombie gun range, when it opens towards the end of next month.
The company was founded in April by Scott Smith and Angus McLeod, OCR (obstacle course racing) coaches, who have competed in more than 150 different assault course races in the UK and abroad.
Together, they are on a mission to inspire both adults and children to get outside and enjoy the benefits of fitness and fun in nature.

Scott said: “We are delighted that our planning application has been approved by East Lothian Council and can’t wait to start building our assault course.
“These are exciting times for Wild Cairns.
“Assault courses offer numerous benefits, such as improving physical fitness, building confidence, enhancing teamwork skills, and boosting mental health through outdoor exercise.
“Our course is designed for both adults and children from age eight upwards, ensuring fun and fitness for the whole family.”
Work is expected to get under way within a matter of days to construct the wooden obstacles, using the natural terrain to make it both challenging and fun for everyone aged eight and above.
The course is the latest addition to the former golf course, which now features self-catering lodges, an award-winning spa and a children’s play barn.
Angus said: “As seasoned obstacle course participants, with over 150 races between us, we have always wanted to have our own venue to get people outdoors and enjoy the sport we are very passionate about, as it not only is it great fun but it can also help build confidence and boost your mental health and working out in the great outdoors.
“When we originally approached Whitekirk Hill, we met with their director, the late Jim Wilkie, and we immediately hit it off.
“His enthusiasm and willingness to listen to our proposal led to further meetings with owners Iain, Andy and general manager Arlene.
“They have all been brilliant with us and have made us feel truly welcome, just as Jim did from the start.
“Their support and collaboration were crucial in agreeing to apply for planning consent.”

Wild Cairns will also offer bespoke corporate team building events.
The tailored experiences are designed to foster teamwork, boost morale and enhance problem-solving skills through a variety of challenging and fun outdoor activities.
Whether it is navigating the assault course, engaging in Airsoft battles or mastering the art of axe-throwing, Wild Cairns aims to provide unique opportunities for teams to grow stronger together.
Arlene Wynn, general manager at Whitekirk Hill, was looking forward to welcoming the new addition.
She said: “When we first met with Wild Cairns, we knew instantly that we wanted to welcome them to Whitekirk Hill.
“We are so excited that they have been given the green light and we cannot wait to see their business emerge and flourish in its new location.
“The enthusiasm of the Wild Cairns team will ensure that whatever they do will be a huge success and we are delighted to be part of their story.
“We can’t wait to tell our members and lodge guests all about them.”
