A COMMUNITY stalwart has been nominated as a Local Hero for the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament.

Earlier this year, all 129 MSPs were asked to identify a constituent who positively impacted the lives of others as their Local Hero.

Martin Whitfield, South Scotland MSP, nominated Gifford resident Lee Rollo Stewart, a funeral director at Tranent Co-operative Funeralcare who also undertakes a range of local community and activities.

This includes arranging Easter bunny visits to care homes, day centres, and children with additional needs, as well as distributing Christmas hampers to other volunteers who help their community.

On September 28, the Local Heroes will participate in a special commemorative event marking the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament, taking place in the Debating Chamber.

Whitfield MSP said: “As the Scottish Parliament prepares to mark its 25th anniversary, it’s right that the people of Scotland are placed at the heart of our events.

“Together with my fellow MSPs, we want to celebrate the achievements of our Local Heroes from across every constituency and region in Scotland.

“I put out a call for local people to nominate a Local Hero who they believe has consistently demonstrated their commitment to making a difference in their community.

“Lee’s dedication to helping others is truly inspirational and she was the outstanding nominee.

“I look forward to her joining us at the commemorative event later this year.”

Throughout the years, Local Heroes have participated in the opening ceremonies of the Scottish Parliament in 2007, 2011, 2016, and 2021.
