TENS of thousands of hens could find a home at a farm between Gifford and East Saltoun.
Two poultry units, each with a capacity of 16,000, could be created at Howden Farm.
The units would be an extension of the existing Scott Eggs Ltd operation consisting of a single 32,000-capacity free-range hen shed.
A planning statement, included in an application to East Lothian Council, reads: “The addition of the two 16,000-capacity sheds will increase the site’s cumulative capacity to 62,000 birds.
“As a free-range operation, the sheds will be fitted with popholes along the side of walls to allow easy access for the birds to the external fenced and planted range area.”
A decision is expected in September.
