TRIBUTES have been paid to a firefighter killed in a road accident between Dirleton and Drem.

Glenn Campbell, 21, from North Berwick, was riding a green Kawasaki motorbike which was involved in a collision with a Scania tanker.

The B1345 was closed for several hours following the incident, which saw police called to the scene at about 7.30am last Wednesday.

Area Commander Marc Pincombe, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s local senior officer for Midlothian, East Lothian and Scottish Borders, paid tribute to his colleague.

He said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of our friend and colleague Glenn Campbell, who passed away on Wednesday, July 17.

“Glenn was a well-respected and loved firefighter at North Berwick Community Fire Station.

“Our thoughts are with Glenn’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.”

It was also said that the Campbell family wished their privacy to be respected at this difficult time.

Tributes, including flowers, cans of Red Bull, baseball caps and a Cadbury’s Fudge, have been left at the scene of the crash.

Another states: “So very sad. Taken far too soon. Ride high young man. My thoughts with his family.”

Plans for a ride out in Mr Campbell’s memory are also being drawn up for Sunday.

People are expected to meet in Musselburgh at 1pm before heading on to Tesco’s North Berwick store for 2pm.

The group will head west to Bonnyrigg before going on to St Mary’s Loch.

The driver of the tanker was uninjured in last Wednesday’s crash and the road was closed to allow collision investigators to conduct enquiries.

Sergeant Barry Sommerville of Police Scotland said: “Our enquiries are continuing into the circumstances of this collision in which a man sadly died, and our thoughts are with his family at this time. I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who may have dash-cam footage, and has not yet spoken to or provided this information to officers, to contact us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 0665 of July 17.
