POLICE are making enquiries after residents were woken in the middle of the night by drivers performing 'donuts' near their homes.

At about 5.55am on Sunday, a report was made to police about anti-social driving taking place at Meadowmill Sports Centre.

Loud screeching could be heard from the car park there, and it was believed that vehicles were engaged in extreme driving, including performing 'donuts' – when vehicles drift round in circles.

Many people in nearby Tranent and Prestonpans were unhappy with the late-night driving antics, which the Courier understands is an ongoing problem at the sports centre car park.

The Courier attended at the car park this week, where tyre marks were clear to see, and spoke to users of the facilities and nearby residents impacted by the noise.

Extensive tyre marks were plain to see at the car park at Meadowmill following the late-night anti-social driving there

A resident who wished to remain anonymous said: "The noise is absolutely horrendous and sometimes it will go on for hours, with tires screeching, engines revving up and, because it is such a quiet area, I think the noise is amplified.

"It is probably most nights something is going up by the car park and the weekend is a lot worse.

"Putting up a gate might help but I suppose they would just go somewhere else."

Another resident, who lives close by, said: "I am thankful that we sleep at the front of the house and not the back, but we can sometimes hear them when they are really loud."

A dog walker who also wished to remain anonymous told the Courier: "I walk my dog here almost every single day and I know a lot of others who do the same, and they are absolutely sick of this behaviour.

"They are here all the time and they can be very intimidating; one time someone on a motorbike parked in front of me and stared at me for 10 minutes straight and I was scared."

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “The anti-social use of motor vehicles in this way is a matter principally for Police Scotland.

"We would urge anyone who is affected by the behaviour to contact the police at the time of the incident so that they can respond.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.55am on Sunday, July 21, officers received a report of concerns around the manner of driving at a car park [near] Tranent.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
