BEACHGOERS are being urged to be careful after firefighters were called out to Longniddry on Friday evening.

East Lothian’s coastline proves a popular destination for visitors and residents throughout the summer months.

However, concerns about wild camping, barbecues and fires are regularly raised by the local authority.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council Countryside Rangers took to social media to highlight the issues.

They said: “It’s so important at this time of year to be very careful when lighting fires or barbecues in the countryside.

“This fire was started accidentally at Longniddry on Friday evening and took the fire brigade half an hour to extinguish.

“Keep barbecues raised off the ground and on the beach.”

Advice was given to people visiting the area on how to have a fire responsibly.

The countryside rangers suggest keeping the fire small and on the beach only.

Meanwhile, people are urged to bring their own wood and, preferably, use a raised fire bowl.

Fires are not to be left unattended and should be fully extinguished with water and remove any remains from the site.

People are also advised to observe high fire risk warnings and to leave no trace.
