Closure of the Bank of Scotland branch in North Berwick has been branded 'ridiculous' for the town at the latest community council meeting.

On June 20, Bank of Scotland announced that the branch would close on February 19, leaving the town without a bank after a number of other banks closed up shop in recent years.

Additional concerns have been raised that this move by the bank will put further pressure on the high street's post office along with parking concerns on North Berwick High Street.

North Berwick Community Council met on July 2 to discuss a number of topics with the bank closure being a topic of discussion.

Kathryn Smith, secretary, said: "I do believe that everyone has been left shocked at the announcement of the closure of the Bank of Scotland in North Berwick.

"North Berwick is a growing town and there is a elderly population who rely on in-banking services, who do not like online banking.

"I do believe that this will put an enormous amount of pressure on the post office and due to lack of parking at the east end of the high street it will cause a lot of problems. The decision is absolutely ridiculous."

Kenny Miller, chairman, said: "I think we should look at the idea of a banking hub, this would bring all of the banks together and we should start working together with the community to achieve that.
