In a historic turn of events, Musselburgh air cadets have clinched the top spot in a 12-person drill competition, breaking a 15-year winning streak held by another squadron in the South East Scotland Wing.

This victory marks the first time since 1957 that 297 (Musselburgh) Squadron has secured the title, making it a “significant milestone” in the squadron’s history.

The competition, known for its “rigorous standards and high level of discipline required”, saw the local air cadets show “precision and excellence”.

Drill competitions are a core aspect of RAF cadet training, emphasising teamwork, discipline and attention to detail.

Cadets are judged on their ability to execute complex drill manoeuvres with synchronicity and precision, reflecting the high standards of the Royal Air Force.

This success has not only brought them the coveted drill competition title but also the honour of representing at the regional field day in August.

They have also been granted the privilege of participating in the Remembrance Service on the Royal Mile in November.

Flight Lieutenant Joe Coppola, the squadron’s Officer Commanding (OC), said: “I am delighted to say, after a 15-year streak by another squadron, we have won the 12-person drill competition.

“This marks history in the wing! The squadron hasn’t won the drill competition since 1957. I could not be more proud of you all.”

He added that Flight Sergeant Alex Robertson, who started his year as Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet for East Lothian at the end of June, played a “pivotal role” in this achievement, deserving “special commendation for his leadership and dedication”.

His efforts were “instrumental” in guiding the team to this historic win. Flight Lieutenant Coppola described the squadron’s victory as “a testament to the hard work, commitment and exceptional teamwork” of all its members.

William Douglas, chair of the civilian committee, added: “It highlights the squadron’s commitment to excellence and sets a powerful example for future cadets.

“Congratulations to Flight Sergeant Alex Robertson and the entire team for their phenomenal effort and well-deserved success.”

The win on Sunday was the end to a weekend of  “inspiring” events for the cadets and volunteers which saw them enjoying a wing dinner dance, participating in Loanhead Gala Day and then several competitions.

New recruits can join the 297 (Musselburgh) Squadron as a cadet, uniformed volunteer, civilian instructor or as a member of the civilian committee.

Flight Lieutenant Coppola said: “The squadron is a welcoming organisation offering exciting opportunities for personal and professional development.”
