Worldwide IT faults are currently affecting services including banks, airlines and other businesses, with a number of issues reported in East Lothian as well.

Overnight, a problem occurred within some Microsoft data centres that affected their services.

At a similar time, but not related to the Microsoft problem, the cybersecurity company Crowdstrike has announced a fault with its anti-virus and anti-malware software.

Riverside Medical Practice in Musselburgh alerted patients of a major outage affecting the practice's phone lines this morning.

The medical practice released a statement saying: "Our phone system is not working this morninge, so patients will not be able to call us to book an appointment and with other queries.

"This is a system-wide fault right across the network and we’re waiting for further updates.

"Apologies to all of our patients for this issue, which is unfortunately outside of our control. We’ll post further updates here as we have them."

Scotmid on Prestonpans High Street is also having problems with its IT systems, with card machines unable to take payments.
