A COMMUNITY pantry in Tranent has announced the closure of its services.

Running out of Volunteer Centre East Lothian (VCEL) on Tranent's high street, the service has offered support to residents struggling to pay for essential items since November 2022.

Anyone could visit the centre to stock up on food and other supplies such as sanitary and household items without a referral.

However, VCEL has announced the closure of the pantry, which will come into effect on Monday.

Those in need will be redirected to local foodbanks.

Volunteer Centre East Lothian will also introduce ‘emergency basic food bags’ as an alternative means of support.

These will include a variety of non-perishable items tailored to meet the basic nutritional needs of individuals and families. This initiative aims to ensure that everyone has access to essential food items in times of crisis.

The bags are available for collection at VCEL’s office on Tranent’s High Street.

Maureen Allan, chief officer at VCEL, said: “We are committed to supporting our community in the best possible way.

“The introduction of emergency basic food bags allows us to respond swiftly to urgent needs and provide immediate relief to those in distress.”

She added: “Our partnership with the local foodbank remains strong. This collaboration ensures that individuals and families requiring more extensive support have access to a broader range of food and essentials.

“We are dedicated to connecting those in need with comprehensive resources and support.

“We thank our community for their unwavering support and patience as we make this transition. Together, we can continue to make a positive impact and support those in need.”
