ROUTES and paths across East Lothian will be explored during an initiative encouraging people to get outdoors.

The East Lothian Walking Festival returns next month with a variety of walks across the county. All of the walks are free, with many starting at or near bus stops or railway stations.

Maggie Allan, of East Lothian Ramblers and a member of the East Lothian Walking Festival steering group, said: “It’s hard to believe this is only our third year!

“We have over 30 walks lined up for our programme already and expect more to come on board between now and the start of Walkfest24 in August.

“The group have worked hard this year to make sure there is something for every age, ability and experience.

“We have walks of various lengths and challenges, some themed around local history, photography and geology, and others specifically for young people or families.

“This year we have even introduced a special walking sports element – it’s a great programme!”

Full listings of the various walks and any potential theme are listed at walkfest.org.uk The festival, which is sponsored by Community Windpower, Scottish Mountaineering Trust, Scottish Forestry and North Berwick Trust, takes place from August 24 to September 1.

It has also been supported by active travel staff at East Lothian Council.

Graeme Yarwood, also a member of the steering group, stressed the importance of booking a spot on the various walks.

He said: “Booking is essential for most of our walks. “We want to make sure everyone feels welcome, safe and enjoys their walks, so we keep the group numbers small.”
