PATRIOTIC English contractors rebuilding North Berwick's harbour wall are flying the flag for a win for Gareth Southgate's men in Sunday's Euro 24 Final... though also giving opponents Spain some love.
After Scotland's early exit from the competition, the North Shields-based team at Southbay Civil Engineering have been displaying the St George Cross on the famous structure, much to the amusement of some harbour visitors.
North Berwick's harbour wall was damaged by storms last year and since rebuild work commenced in May, not long before the Euros started in June, there has been plenty of good-natured banter between English and Scottish workers on-site.
But in true sporting spirit, the English contractors have also flown the flags of each of England's opponents in the knock-out rounds... and have continued that tradition all the way to the final, with their displays becoming something of a tourist attraction.
Ron Johnson, of Southbay Civil Engineering and site supervisor, said: "We are really looking forward to the game.
"I've been drinking in the local pubs such as the Auld Hoose and when the England games have been on the banter with the locals has been really good.
"We are in the minority up here but the locals have been really good to us and when Scotland were playing we supported them.
"Just to show there has been no malice from us, we sent away for flags from the opposition teams facing England, such as Switzerland and the Netherlands, and flew their flags too. I think people have enjoyed seeing them.
"The game against Spain will be a tough one but, throughout the competition we haven't been playing particularly well, so my theory is that England are due us a good performance. I'd like to see England win but anything could happen."
Ron, 62, and John O'Neill, 57, both from Sunderland, along with their colleague, Dean Lishman, 35, from Consett, County Durham, have been hard at work on the wall, which it's hoped will be completed before the end of August.
Southgate's men will be taking on Luis de la Fuente's Spain in the final of the Euros on Sunday, kick-off 8pm. . . and Ron and co will be cheering them on in one of North Berwick's fine hostelries!
