A “GENRE-HOPPING” combination of musical styles has inspired an East Lothian trio’s latest single.

Alt-pop group racecar have released new track Remains, the second single from their forthcoming album Pink Car.

The self-released song explores the “grey area” after the end of a relationship, touching on themes including indignance and anger, vulnerability and denial.

Comprising childhood friends Izzy Flower, Robin Brill and Calum Mason, racecar were officially formed in 2021 after the band had been tentatively sending demos back and forth.

An intensive two-week stint in Izzy’s mum’s livingroom in Dunbar gave rise to Orange Car later that year, and the album was officially released in 2022.

Since then, the band have gone from strength to strength, captivating listeners with their creatively kaleidoscopic material.

Former Knox Academy pupil Calum plays bass, with Robin on guitar and Izzy on vocals, keys and synthesiser.

Inspired by Taylor Swift’s Reputation and David Gray’s Please Forgive Me, with a sprinkling of OutKast’s Millionaire, the single borrows its sound from turn-of-the-millennium alt-rock/nu-metal, as well as dubstep/liquid DnB, but remains true to the principles of pop.

The trio said: “Pink Car is our ode to pop, and Remains encapsulates this.

“The new single ties the heavier side of racecar’s sound to the vulnerability we strive to explore.

“Like most of the album, we spent a long time chewing out the demo side of things before finishing vocals and live drums in the studio and then tracking guitars at home.

“Most prominently, it features the analogue DRMIV drum machine that was used to generate most of the sampled drum sounds throughout the album.”

Celebrating the new singles and album, racecar performed at Edinburgh’s Kelburn Garden Party last week.

Last year, the band attempted to raise £20,000 to fund their second album and offered people the chance to go go-karting with them or play live for them in exchange for a donation.
