PUPILS from Elphinstone Primary School have showcased their miniature garden in a national contest.

‘Nature’s engineers’ was the theme at the 2024 Pocket Garden Design Competition, hosted annually by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Nursery and school pupils aged three to 18 were invited to design a miniature outdoor green space which attracts wildlife and features reused items that would otherwise have been thrown away.

Elphinstone Primary’s entry was one of 30 to be selected from more than 100 from across Scotland.

Their submission, titled ‘100 years of living with nature’, celebrates the school’s centenary this September. The garden reflects on the old school building and their mining heritage, as well as containing an array of flowers, peas and herbs.

The winning classes and schools have built and grown their designs, and public voting decided the ultimate winners, but the Elphinstone Primary entry was not amongst them.

Eve Keepax, education and learning officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “The transformations from design to real garden are amazing, and I would like to congratulate all the pupils and educators.”
