WINDOWS were smashed and a fire started at a school in Prestonpans at the weekend, while a van parked outside was left with a cracked windscreen.
The incidents happened over the weekend at St Gabriel's Primary School, with parents finding the destruction on Monday morning when they arrived at the school on the first day of the holidays to prepare an area for new playground paintings.
Police Scotland had been made aware of the incidents at about 6.30pm on Saturday.
One of the parents told the Courier: "We came along to St Gabriel’s to set up for the new playground paintings to be done for the kids and unfortunately there has been quite a bit of damage done over the weekend.
"Windows have been smashed and a van has been vandalised.
"It’s such a shame that the school is being destroyed and this is only the first day of the holidays."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a fire and vandalism at a school on Grange Avenue in Prestonpans around 6.30pm on Saturday, June 29. Enquiries are ongoing.”
An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “We were disappointed to discover a broken toilet window as well as a cracked van windscreen.
"The appropriate remedial action will be taken.”
