I AM RUNNING for election in East Lothian to support our community, so everyone can thrive.
Throughout my career, I have supported vulnerable young people globally. Living in war-torn Bosnia and poverty-stricken areas of Ghana and India has reinforced my belief in the importance of peace and stability, achieved through empowered and supportive communities led by politicians with integrity.
My work leading a charity dedicated to improving the lives of children in care taught me the power of giving a voice to those in need and the necessity of leaders who listen and act to improve their constituents’ lives.
In East Lothian, I see incredible potential and pressing needs. Our community deserves respect through consultation and inclusion in decision-making. The closure of community hospitals in Dunbar and North Berwick without consulting medical staff or the local community is unacceptable. I will work to create local solutions involving the community to find sustainable outcomes.
Every child deserves the best possible start in life, and our plans to increase funding for schools, reduce class sizes, provide mental health support, and ensure access to extracurricular activities are crucial. As a dad, youth worker and rugby coach, I see first-hand the difference that positive, supportive relationships make in young people’s lives. Addressing the rise in anti-social behaviour requires youth workers on our streets building constructive relationships with young people, not leaving them bored and disruptive.
Our environment is another priority. East Lothian’s natural beauty is a treasure that must be protected. I will work to end sewage pollution in our rivers and seas, promote renewable energy projects, and ensure that our local policies align with the fight against climate change. While East Lothian can be proud of its sustainable energy contributions to the National Grid, these projects must be developed with minimal disruption and maximum local benefits. Tackling climate change can also alleviate the cost-of-living crisis. I will insulate homes and provide heat pumps to low-income households to reduce bills and aid the climate. Additionally, removing the two-child benefit tax credit limit will provide an extra £3,455 per child to families in need.
Economic stability and growth are also critical. We need to support local businesses, create jobs and ensure everyone in East Lothian benefits from a thriving economy. Our plan includes fairer business rates, investment in local infrastructure and support for entrepreneurs.
I bring a track record of effective leadership. I believe in listening to and working with the community to find solutions that work for everyone. I am asking for your vote to bring positive change to East Lothian. Together, we can build a community where everyone has the chance to succeed and where our natural and cultural heritage is protected for future generations.
Duncan Dunlop biography - I live with my young family in Dunbar, where I referee and coach mini rugby. I have dedicated my career to advocating for vulnerable young people. I worked across the globe, including in New Zealand, West Africa, post-communist Lithuania, and building peace across former Yugoslavia. I am a qualified youth worker and a seasoned chief executive specialising in care system reform for children who can’t live with their mum or dads. As chief executive of Who Cares? Scotland for nearly a decade, I transformed the organisation into a globally respected advocacy group, representing over 2,000 children annually and being named UK Charity of the Year. My commitment continues to support organisations worldwide in holding governments accountable and refining practices to ensure children have the best chance to form lifelong, loving relationships.
