TRANENT’S The Fraser Centre celebrated community spirit earlier this month as the Inspiring Volunteer Awards marked their 40th anniversary.

Hosted by Volunteer Centre East Lothian (VCEL), the event was attended by more than 80 community members and volunteers, highlighting their contributions in East Lothian.

The awards were presented by guests including Councillor Norman Hampshire and Lyn Marshall, from the East Lothian Lieutenancy.

Malcolm Fairgrieve won Community Volunteer of the Year award for his work as general assistant and committee member with Macmerry Miners Club.

Benjamin Brown was awarded Young Volunteer of the Year for his time volunteering with Musselburgh Library.

The Lifelong Commitment Volunteer of the Year award was won by John Hood, who takes on the roles of club manager and coach at Musselburgh Windsor FC.

Ryan Jeffries, Taryn Wallis, John Finch, and Muirfield Riding Therapy’s Saturday volunteer team were also prizewinners.

Maureen Allan, chief officer at VCEL, said: “These awards emphasise the crucial role of volunteers in shaping East Lothian’s future.

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of our community, and their selfless contributions have created a foundation of compassion and resilience that we can all be proud of.

“Celebrating 40 years of volunteering is a testament to the enduring spirit of service that thrives in East Lothian.”
