Another bank closure is to impact East Lothian - leaving one of the county's major towns without a bank branch.

The Bank of Scotland has announced it is closing its North Berwick branch on February 19, 2025.

In a statement, the bank said: "Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch.

"Most customers are now using our mobile banking app, internet banking or calling us instead.

This means they are using branches, including our North Berwick branch much less. Because of this, we'll be closing our North Berwick branch."

Following the closure of the town's Royal Bank of Scotland branch about five years ago and then its TSB branch shutting in 2021, the town will be left without a bank branch, though some banking services can be done at the North Berwick Post Office.

Bank of Scotland says that customer and business transactions at its North Berwick branch have fallen by more than 40 per cent in the last five years. Approximately 484 customers use the branch every month.

When told of the decision, local councillor Carol McFarlane (Lab) told the Courier: "This would be a tragedy for North Berwick if this is true."

In May, Bank of Scotland closed its Dunbar branch. Today's announcement will mean East Lothian only has two Bank of Scotland branches: in Haddington and Musselburgh.
