THE General Election candidates for the new Lothian East constituency are set to face tough questions at a hustings this evening (Wednesday).

Poverty and inequality are the focus of the Question Time event, which will take place at The Fraser Centre, Tranent, from 7pm to 8.45pm.

Each of the seven candidates standing for election in Lothian East was invited to attend the hustings and address community concerns.

Douglas Alexander (Labour), Lyn Jardine (SNP) and Shona McIntosh (Scottish Green) have all confirmed their attendance. Liberal Democrat candidate Duncan Dunlop has prior commitments and so will be represented by colleague Elisabeth Wilson.

They will face questions on topics including poverty, social security, inequality and hunger, which were submitted in advance by East Lothian community members.

East Lothian Foodbank and the Working for Change Collective are co-hosting the event, which will be chaired by the Rev Douglas Hamilton of the Parish of Traprain and former chair of the Scottish Poverty and Inequality Commission.

The event is free for East Lothian residents but anyone wishing to attend is asked to register. Go to bit.ly/PovertyandInequalitiesQuestionTime to do so.
