FORMER East Lothian Courier photographer George Johnston passed away on June 10, aged 93.
Born in Cockenzie and spending much of his life with his parents in Port Seton, he was a much-loved member of the East Lothian community.
George started working as a painter and decorator but unexpectedly found a love for photography and decided to turn this into his career.
He was entirely self-taught, determined to learn everything he could about how to work with cameras and take the best pictures.
George joined the Courier as a photographer and was a valued member of the team during his time working on the paper.
He trained fellow photographer Robert Hill, whom he loved working alongside throughout their careers.
George’s daughter, Karen, told the Courier that she remembered in particular her dad enjoying capturing East Lothian’s annual gala days.
Alongside his passion for photography, he enjoyed gardening and spent a lot of his free time tending to his own garden.
George’s three children, Karen, David and Alan, are left with fond memories of their dad.
Karen said: “He was such a loving family man who was also loved by all of his neighbours. We’ll miss him.”
George’s funeral will take place on Wednesday, July 3, at 1.30pm at Prestonpans Cemetery, followed by tea at Port Seton Bowling Club.
