WORK on a major upgrade at Athelstaneford’s historic Flag Heritage Centre is now under way.

Paths leading to the 16th-century doocot, which houses an audiovisual presentation of the story of the Battle of Athelstaneford, are being remade.

Illustrated granite roundels, each carved with a different part of the history of the Saltire, are being inserted to lead visitors to the doocot.

They chart the development of the national symbol of Scotland, from the cross in the sky seen during the nearby battle in 832AD to the current-day usage of the Saltire.

Dave Williamson, trust convener, said: “Regrettably, we have had to close the centre for two weeks from June 17 to ensure public safety, but we are looking forward to its reopening with a splendid new pathway enhancing the visitor experience.”
