SFRS confirmed to the Courier that a fire engine from North Berwick had attended a grass fire and the flames were doused with backpack extinguishers.
An anonymous passerby said: "There was quite a bad fire about 10pm at Gullane beach dunes on Wednesday night.
"By the time the fire service had arrived, one or two individuals risked their own safety to create a safe zone that protected the wind from spreading the fire up to the dry green area behind."
Firefighters left the scene at 12.08am and there were no injuries.
