An East Lothian-themed take on A Christmas Carol, from a team led by Prestonpans Robbie Gordon, has been announced as this year’s Brunton pantomime.

A Christmas Carol will run from Wednesday, December 4 to Saturday, January 4.

Brunton Theatre Trust is working in collaboration with critically acclaimed theatre company Wonder Fools to present the new show.

Wonder Fools, a registered charity, was started by former Preston Lodge High School pupil Robbie, 30, and friend Jack Nurse, from Glasgow.

The company has put on a number of theatre productions, including McNeill of Tranent: Fastest Man in the World.

Last year, the group took its production Same Team – A Street Soccer Story to the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.

Panto is a long-standing festive tradition for The Brunton’s audiences and this year sees A Christmas Carol presented at the Corn Exchange in Haddington, and Loretto Theatre in Musselburgh, with both public and school performance dates.

Wonder Fools writers have been working on a pantomime version of the much-loved story of the same title, set in the county.

This new pantomime, with original songs, is inspired by Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas story.

Robbie said: “We are honoured to be writing the Brunton pantomime this year.

“The Brunton was one of the first places I ever saw live theatre and it will be a privilege to give a similar magical experience to future generations of theatre-goers.

“There is a rich tradition of pantomime in Scotland, and it feels very exciting to be tackling one in the region I grew up in.

“For us, our work is all about creating high-quality theatrical experiences that provide a good night out and we can’t wait to bring this story to life.”

Robbie and Jack founded Wonder Fools on the belief that high-quality arts experiences should be for everyone, and they have taken their productions across the UK, from Scotland’s main producing houses to town halls.

Michael Stitt, chair of Brunton Theatre Trust, said: “Pantomime is a very important part of our programme, bringing fun, joy and laughter to our audiences during the festive season.

“Wonder Fools are hugely experienced in writing and creating engaging, high-quality theatre and we are excited to be collaborating with them.

“We are also delighted that we can involve young performers once again in our pantomime, in the important and integral role of chorus.

“This is a great opportunity for young people to experience being part of a professional production.”

Further announcements will be made regarding auditions for the young chorus and ticket on-sale dates.

Both Loretto Theatre and the Corn Exchange are being used as performance spaces while The Brunton remains closed, after structural surveys identified reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in parts of the building.

The Brunton Hall remains open for the trust’s box office and East Lothian Council services.
