A North Berwick couple have repeated their wedding vows after eight years of marriage to give the bride’s grandmother a chance to see them wed after missing the big day first time round.
Andrew Watson and Laura Paterson became Mr and Mrs Watson on May 20, 2016, at Balbirnie House, near Glenrothes.
On that occasion, Laura’s grandmother, Catherine, 81, was unable to attend the ceremony due to living in the south of England and being housebound.
The couple’s relationship began in 2012 when they both worked for Scottish Widows in Edinburgh – but they only started chatting properly on a popular dating site instead.
On their first date they went to a pub quiz, securing second place and winning Jelly Babies and a “cops ’n’ robbers” set, complete with handcuffs.
When Andrew, who works in finance in Edinburgh, placed one of the Jelly Babies between his lips, the date ended with a kiss.
On May 20 this year, Andrew, 43, and Laura, 40, in full wedding attire, renewed their vows in an outdoor ceremony in the garden of Tantallon House care home, where Catherine now lives.
The service was attended by a number of friends and family, some of whom had travelled from as far afield as Birmingham. Andrew’s parents, John and Aileen, also joined them from their home in Kilmacolm, in the west of Scotland.
Other guests included Andrew’s sister Sarah, and her partner Jonathan, alongside their children, Ailsa and Heidi.
Residents of the home were also invited to the garden to watch – even the couple’s dog, Benny, was kitted out in a black tuxedo.
The ceremony was overseen by Angela Thomson, the activities lead at the care home, who welcomed the guests and then said: “Let’s gather round to commemorate eight splendid and joyous years of marriage between the dynamic duo, Andrew and Laura Watson.
“Today is extra special as we have the lovely Catherine, Laura’s grandmother, joining in on the fun.
“Sure, she might have missed the actual wedding day, but hey, better late than never, right?”
The couple went on to say their vows, with Laura tearfully paying tribute to her grandmother.
She said: “I appreciate everything that you have done for me and the love you have given me.
“I cherish every memory I have of you and I am so happy you live round the corner, so I can see you every day.
“You are my world, Grandma, you are my soulmate and I love you more than anything, more than words can say.
“So my big thank you is to you – I love you.”
Laura added: “I want to say thank you to Aileen and John as well, you are both wonderful parents and you brought up an amazing son.”
Andrew, fully kitted in kilt and jacket, said: “Laura, thank you for being you. Eight years of marriage and nearly 20 years together – I couldn’t have done it without you.”
Angela ended the ceremony by saying: “Here’s to many more years of laughter, love and unforgettable moments for this fantastic trio.
“Cheers to Andrew, Laura, Catherine and little Benny – may your lives continue to be filled with joy and endless Jelly Babies.”
