MAJOR roadworks, which have been causing headaches to drivers on a key route for more than a month, show no sign of being completed soon.

Gas distribution company SGN are carrying out “essential repair works” at the junction of Dirleton Avenue, Station Hill, Station Road and York Road, North Berwick – the main route in and out of the town to the west.

The gas network repairs involve temporary traffic lights and previously led to the closure of Station Hill to traffic; it is now re-open but York Road is now closed at the junction.

Drivers now face lengthy tailbacks on the route – particularly on Dirleton Avenue.

While traffic on nearby residential streets, such as Ware Road and Old Abbey Road, is much heavier as motorists seek to bypass the delays.

A spokesperson for SGN said: "We’re carrying out essential repair work to our gas network in the area.

"Unfortunately, due to the nature of this work, it’s too difficult to give a completion date at the moment but we are working as quickly and safely as we can.

"We’d like to apologise for any disruption this is causing to local residents."

Kenny Miller, chairman of North Berwick Community Council said: "They are causing some inconvenience, but I would hope that they aren't going on any longer than they need to. I understand this is to carry out a repair to services under the road, so I can only as people to be patient and work round these works."
