A VIOLENT man who threatened to slit a woman's throat with a cut-throat razor and subjected her to sexual assaults was jailed for eight years today (Thursday).

Robert Fyvie subjected his victim to repeated abuse during a year-long ordeal for the woman at addresses in East Lothian.

A judge told Fyvie, 43, at the High Court in Edinburgh: "The behaviour was seriously abusive and controlling. It included holding a cut-throat razor to her throat and threatening to cut her throat."

During one incident, Fyvie brandished a broken umbrella spoke at the woman and threatened to stab her with the makeshift weapon.

He also seriously assaulted her by punching her on the body, causing her to fall to the ground and suffer fractured ribs.

Sexual abuse

Fyvie, a prisoner in Edinburgh, was earlier convicted of a total of six offences – two crimes against the woman and a further four against police officers.

He resisted and struggled violently with officers on September 5, 2019, at an address in Muirpark Drive, Tranent, and at Dalkeith Police Station.

He pulled away from them, thrashed his arms and legs, removed leg restraints and refused to leave a police vehicle during the incident.

Fyvie, who was drunk at the time, also assaulted three police officers by attempting to headbutt two of them and kicking a third on the body.

He was also convicted of assaulting the woman on November 11, 2019, at an address in Tranent to her severe injury by repeatedly punching her on the body and causing her to fall.

He was further found guilty of subjecting the woman to a course of abusive conduct between June 2021 and 2022 in East Lothian.

During it, he repeatedly shouted, swore and directed derogatory comments towards her and monitored her movements.

He used her mobile phone SIM card to access her text messages, refused to let her use the toilet on her own and demanded to have sex with her.

On one occasion, he sexually touched the woman without her consent and on another carried out a sexual assault on her without her consent.

During the second episode of sexual abuse, she was pushed onto a bed, repeatedly slapped on the face, and had her hair pulled out, as well as being threatened with the umbrella spoke.

The judge, Lord Doherty, jailed Fyvie for a year for the offences of struggling with and assaulting police officers.

He imprisoned Fyvie for a further seven years for the assault and abuse directed against the woman, the jail terms to be served consecutively.

The judge also ordered that, for a further two years, Fyvie should be monitored in the community, when he would be under licence and could be returned to prison if he breached its conditions.

Fyvie was placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.
