MEMBERS of the public are invited to find out more about a growing community garden project in Musselburgh.

An open event is being held at the Fisherrow Community Garden this Sunday, 11am-1pm.

Located at the Fisherrow Centre on South Street, the garden, started by the Sustaining Musselburgh group, is in a small walled area towards the Hercus Loan entrance car park.

Gaynor Allen, chair of Sustaining Musselburgh, said: “The Fisherrow Community Garden was established a year ago by Sustaining Musselburgh with the help of a £2,000 grant from the Musselburgh Area Partnership to enable a group of residents to grow food together. This has proved hugely successful and the group has gone from strength to strength.

“They are continuing to grow and are helping with the Rennie Bridge Community Garden.

“We are now trying to create a second community allotment on the Mucklets.”

It is hoped that more keen growers will be enlisted to get involved in the community garden at Fisherrow. Visitors will get the chance to look round and have a go at planting vegetables.

Everything from broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbages and radishes to beetroot, courgette, squash, kale, carrots, peas, beans, cucumber and potatoes is being grown in the garden.

Everyone, including children and dogs on leads, is welcome to go along to the open event.

Fiona Thomson added: “Working together in the garden is a great way to meet new people and really feel part of the community.

“We’re all amateurs and we each have different skills and interests. We’re learning from each other all the time. It’s been amazing to see the space develop.

“This time last year it was totally disused but, by the end of the summer, we had more courgettes than we knew what to do with. And the kale and Brussels sprouts kept us going all winter.”
