A FORMER Preston Lodge High School pupil has returned to her old secondary school to help ensure youngsters get the best start to the day.

Fresh fruit, bread, milk and yoghurts were among the items donated to the school’s breakfast club from Snappy Shopper to give youngsters the best possible start to exam season.

The club is open to students every morning of the week during school term, providing a range of healthy breakfast choices free of charge to all pupils.

Former Courier reporter Caitlin Johnston, a former pupil at the Prestonpans school and Snappy Shopper representative, visited the secondary school last month to donate a variety of goodies, including fresh bread, milk, cereal, fruit, yoghurts, and breakfast bars.

The breakfast club is completely volunteer led by the staff and students at Preston Lodge High School.

It runs by securing funds and donations of supplies through Preston Lodge Learning Foundation, the school’s charitable trust.

The donation was welcomed by Julie Lowe, head of development with the Preston Lodge Learning Foundation.

She said: “Our aim is to ensure all our young people have access to a healthy, nutritious breakfast and are ready for learning at the start of the school day.

“Thank you to Snappy Shopper for such a generous donation and to former student and friend of Preston Lodge Caitlin Johnston.”

Paul McLennan, East Lothian’s MSP, welcomed the donation.

He said: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

“Preston Lodge’s breakfast club works hard to ensure children are fed and ready for learning ahead of the school day.

“All children deserve to start the day with a full stomach.

“I commend the breakfast club for ensuring this for pupils most in need.”
