A PHONEBOX outside a popular park could be spruced up.

A question was raised about the future of the phonebox on Bayswell Road by Dunbar Community Council last month.

When BT offered last year to sell the phonebox, near Lauderdale Park, it was retained.

Rena Keller, who recently joined the community council, told the meeting that it was looking “pretty shabby” and said: “I was wondering if it is still being used?”

She was hopeful that the phonebox could be made to look “nice again”.

It was suggested that the phonebox was occasionally used by people to contact the Coastguard if they spotted someone in trouble.

At the group’s meeting this month, Pippa Swan, chairwoman, gave an update and said that BT would look into cleaning the phonebox.

Across the country, phoneboxes have been adopted by communities and used for a variety of purposes, including as art galleries, a mini bar with music and disco lights, or as a store for a defibrillator, which can be used to help someone in cardiac arrest.

In Pencaitland, the phonebox is used as an informal swap shop.
