A wheelchair-bound RAF veteran has been left shaken after thieves entered his home in Musselburgh in the early hours of the morning and stole £200.
Disabled Kenneth Bowman, 82, served in the RAF from 1960 to 1972 where he said he travelled the world.
Now retired, the veteran lives alone at his home in the town centre where he is regularly attended to by nurses and care workers.
Mr Bowman said he heard the thieves enter his home at about 1.30am on Wednesday.
He said: “I was asleep in my bed when I heard a loud thud. I shouted out and asked who was there but there was no answer.
“I thought it was the nurses, but it must have been the thieves.”
The next day he discovered his front door was open and that thieves had made off with his wallet, containing about £200 in cash and his bank card.
He said: “I called police, and they came out. My bank had been in contact to say the card had been used at a garage and that it had then been declined. So they can’t get any more money now.
“I don’t know if I locked the door properly. I have arthritis in my hands and I think maybe I didn’t lock it right.
“They probably were trying doors until they got in somewhere.”
Mr Bowman said a neighbour captured the alleged thieves on CCTV. He said there were two individuals, both wearing masks to cover their faces.
He said: “It is very scary. I am disabled – there is nothing I could have done to stop them. A lot of people around here are old like me and they are scared.
“This seems to be happening a lot. I feel not enough is being done about it.”
