Youngsters with a spirit of adventure have been urged to join in the fun with Musselburgh’s new Royal Marines Cadets (RMC).
Part of the Sea Cadets, recruits enjoy a host of activities on the water as well as serious adventure training on land.
The Musselburgh unit has launched a brand-new RMC detachment and has vacancies for young people aged 13 to 18.
They will get the chance to specialise in orienteering, field craft, camping, weapon handling and shooting.
Also on offer are rock climbing, sailing, windsurfing, rowing, powerboating, ceremonial drill, first aid, engineering and even weather forecasting.
Royal Marines Cadets take part in competitions and are awarded badges for skills and qualifications, such as The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and BTEC or City & Guilds.
As cadets hone their skills, they can also compete in the Gibraltar Cup at the Royal Marines Commando Training Centre in Devon, testing themselves on the world-famous assault course.
A unit spokesperson said: “The advantages of being a Royal Marines Cadet include national and international travel, gaining confidence in new situations, feeling more in charge of yourself and making a good impression.”
Musselburgh Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets meet in the HQ on South Street on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6.45pm-9pm.
The detachment is also actively recruiting adult volunteers to make “a positive difference” to the lives of young people in the area.
Volunteers will receive an induction and will be given training and support to make them feel comfortable in the role.
Warrant Officer 2 (SCC) Chris Gay RNR, the unit’s commanding officer, said: “Musselburgh Sea Cadets look forward to welcoming more youngsters and adult volunteers into our new detachment and trying the experience as a Royal Marines Cadet.”
