A roundabout linking Tranent’s High Street to Church Street and Bridge Street has been labelled “dangerous” by a community councillor.

The issue was raised at the August meeting of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council following a crash at the roundabout the week prior, on August 10.

Police were called to a two-car crash, which community council member Robert McNeill said “resulted in the front of one of the cars being badly damaged”.

Mr McNeill said the road was an issue with drivers unclear about who has the right of way at the sharp turn of the roundabout.

He said: “This has been an ongoing issue with the roundabout for quite a while. Drivers are ignoring the Highway Code when going round it and it is dangerous.

“I think we should ask the council to do an audit of the road and assess the dangers there. We need to come up with a plan for how to reduce the accidents there.”

Mike Falconer, chair of the group, said he was keen to meet with East Lothian Council to discuss what steps could be taken to make the roundabout more safe.

He said: “We can’t change drivers being ignorant. I would like to meet with someone from the council to discuss what steps could be taken to improve the area. I think doing something similar to what we have done with Tranent Mains Road, where we highlighted issues of drivers not understanding the road and improvements were made, would be useful.”

Councillor Fiona Dugdale, ward councillor for Tranent, Wallyford and Macmerry, said she would speak to roads officers about meeting with members of the community council.
