A new bakery has opened on Tranent High Street at the site of the former Nettie’s take away.
Allan’s Bakery, who currently operate on Restalrig Road in Edinburgh, has expanded into Tranent creating four new jobs in the town.
Brothers Allan Shaw, from Edinburgh, and Chris Shaw, who lives in Tranent, have been running Allan’s Bakery in Edinburgh for eight years.
Supplying baked goods to local customers as well as to various businesses, the brothers also supplied goods to Nettie’s prior to the business closing earlier this year.
Allan, 42, told the Courier: “When we heard Nettie's was closing it felt like the right opportunity to make the move.
“We had a good relationship with them, so we knew they were closing I think before others did. That allowed us to make the move quickly.
“It just felt like the right time and with Chris living in Tranent, it was the right location too.”
Baking runs in the family for the two brothers, with their dad, also named Allan, running Allan’s Home Bakery in Edinburgh for many years.
Allan said: “It was difficult because when I started a lot of people would mistake me for my dad!
“We wanted to do our own unique thing; we kept the Allan’s Bakery part but dropped the home part of the name.”
The new shop opened on Monday and will operate from Monday to Saturday from 6am to 2pm and will be supplied with goods from the bakery in Edinburgh.
Allan said: “We’ll still both be running it. All the food will be made fresh at our bakery in Edinburgh and delivered each morning to Tranent.
“We’ve taken on four members of staff, all local people too, one of which will be full-time and the others part-time.
“The response from the community has been phenomenal. Since we announced it on Facebook we have had so many great comments.
“It is always worrying thinking you may not be welcomed into a new community. But people have been great so far!”
Mike Falconer, chair of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, said: "The bakery is a welcome sight for Tranent. I wish them the best of luck and I am delighted to have them in the town."
Kenny McLeod, ward councillor for Tranent, Wallyford and Macmerry, said: "Businesses like this are essential for the area. I am very happy to see them opening and I look forward to getting a fresh breakfast roll from them in the future."
