Pupils at a county high school are set to receive an extra day's summer holiday to allow staff more time to prepare for major changes caused by its enforced partial closure.

East Lothian schools pupils return to the classrooms on Wednesday, August 16.

However, pupils at Preston Lodge High School in Prestonpans will return the following day, the Thursday.

This has come as a result of the partial closure of the school in May after survey work discovered faults with the Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) used in the school's construction.

Six new temporary classrooms have also been installed on the grounds to help mitigate the loss of facilities on campus.

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: "It is normal practice when building disruption occurs for schools to agree additional staff preparation time with their local authority and Scottish Government.

"The Scottish Government agreed to the exceptional closure of Preston Lodge High School on August 16 for an additional staff development day, to 'support the provision of alternative arrangements for teaching and learning following the closure of classrooms within the school'.

"We understand that additional days out of school can present challenges for families, but we hope everyone understands that these are very unusual times, and the school team will use this additional day to ensure high quality learning for all year groups when term resumes on August 17."
