A DEDICATED East Lothian volunteer is preparing to take men’s mental health support to new heights with a skydive in aid of a local charity.

Drew Cairns, 42, who is originally from Whitecraig but now lives in Haddington, actively participates in Changes men’s peer support group.

He is set for a skydiving adventure to promote awareness of the mental health and wellbeing charity, which is based on Market Street, Musselburgh, and the importance of men’s mental health support.

His challenge will also raise funds for men’s mental health initiatives.

Described by Changes as “a devoted father-of-three, loving husband, and a proud dog dad to two lively Labradors”, Drew understands first-hand the significance of mental health support systems.

The former Whitecraig Primary School and Musselburgh Grammar School pupil said: “When I was 20, I almost lost a close family member to suicide. Fortunately, he survived but this had a massive impact on myself and there wasn’t a huge amount of support available.

“A year later I lost a nephew who was more like a brother. I did not know where to look for help or if indeed any help was even available.

“I recently became a wellbeing volunteer in my workplace to try and encourage men and women with mental health problems to speak up and not suffer in silence.

“I wanted to do more, though, and in particular tackle the stigma that surrounds men and mental health.

“My research into men’s mental health charities led me to Changes East Lothian and, more specifically, their men’s group. I am now a proud volunteer with this group every Monday night. The statistics around male suicide rates in our country are frightening and saddening.

“I am not only doing this skydive to raise money for the men’s group but to raise awareness of Changes East Lothian and also highlight the issue around men’s mental health.”

Drew is set to take to the skies at the skydiving centre at Strathallan, near Auchterarder, on August 13.

He is inviting individuals, businesses and communities alike to contribute, emphasising that every donation, regardless of the amount, will make a difference.

Through various events and programmes, Changes strives “to raise awareness, offer resources and create a compassionate community that fosters healing and resilience”.
