FIFTY copies of a book celebrating diversity have been donated to East Lothian schools after the author stopped off in Haddington.
Youngsters at Letham Mains Primary School took part in a special storytime event with Bridget Campbell, whose children’s picture book Trudy and Me tells the story of four-year-old Patrick, big brother to two-year-old Trudy, who has Down’s Syndrome.
Ms Campbell wrote and illustrated the book alongside her friend, Lauren Eliott Lockhart, whose children are the subject of the book.
The author visited the Haddington primary school and met children from P1 and P2/3 classes.
Pupils were captivated during the storytelling session, also learning some Makaton signs, a language programme that uses symbols and signs.
Ms Campbell said: “Lauren and I were motivated to create the book as we recognised that children with disabilities are underrepresented in literature and this is something that we passionately wanted to help change.”
Bruce Murray, headteacher at Letham Mains Primary School, described the book as “wonderful”.
He said: “It’s vitally important that children can celebrate similarities and celebrate differences.
“The book is simple but thought-provoking and does that wonderful thing of allowing young children to begin to understand others’ perspectives. Our children loved it!”
