THE remarkable stories of men and women who died during the First and Second World Wars will be told in Haddington.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is bringing War Graves Week to the town and offering tours at St Martin’s Cemetery.

War Graves Week, which runs from Saturday until next Sunday (May 28), is an initiative to encourage the local community to come together and discover the war heritage on their doorstep.

People can learn about the stories of those commemorated by the CWGC in Haddington, and the skills, dedication and expertise of the group’s staff and volunteers who work to keep their memory alive.

Free guided tours will take place on May 20 and 27 at 2pm at St Martin’s Cemetery, giving people in Haddington the chance to discover the remarkable stories of the men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars and who are buried in their community.

Claire Horton, director general of the CWGC, said: “Behind every name on a war grave or memorial in Haddington is a human story waiting to be discovered and War Graves Week is the perfect opportunity to do just that.”
