SURF therapy and the benefits for children’s mental health will be highlighted at a special talk this summer.

The Wave Project has teamed up with surfing brand Saltrock for a series of talks, which began yesterday (Wednesday), across the UK, including at Belhaven.

Joe Taylor, founder and CEO of The Wave Project, will outline the role the charity has played in mental and emotional health in young people over the last decade, as well as the plans for the future.

Surf therapy programmes offer young people aged eight to 21 the opportunity to participate in a specialised surf therapy session once a week for six weeks.

Each young person is paired with a volunteer surf mentor and receives one-to-one support appropriate to their needs for the duration of the course.

Mr Taylor said: “Surf Therapy has grown from a pilot scheme in Cornwall into a global phenomenon.

“At The Wave Project, we are now thinking about how this amazing form of therapy can be developed further to reach more young people across the UK. The talks are an opportunity to discuss these ideas with people who may benefit from surf therapy themselves, or are interested in getting more involved.”

Belhaven Surf Centre will host the talk, which is free to attend, on June 9 and for more information go to eventbrite.co.uk
