THE Bass Rock near North Berwick featured on yesterday evening's episode of the BBC's much-anticipated new nature series hosted by Sir David Attenborough.
Wild Isles, the first episode of which aired on Sunday, is a new series that looks to celebrate the rich variety of habitats that exist on our doorstep, proving that wildlife in the British Isles is every bit as dramatic and spectacular as anywhere else on the planet.
The Bass Rock features in a segment in the first episode dedicated to seabird species found in the British Isles, with a particular focus on the northern gannet.
The world's largest northern gannet colony is situated on the island and Sir David goes into detail about their lives and migratory nature.
In the episode, he states: "Britain is also a crucial destination for tens of thousands of migrating birds that come to breed and feed in our summer season.
"Our fish-rich seas support 65 per cent of the world’s gannets, 75,000 pairs of which arrive on Scotland’s Bass Rock every year to nest, forming the biggest colony of northern gannets in the world."
The episode also features dramatic footage that includes sweeping drone shots of the Bass Rock, as well as underwater shots that show the gannets hunting their prey.
Shot in summer, the footage also shows stunning scenes of the adjacent East Lothian landscape, with North Berwick Law and Traprain Law visible in the background.
The next episode airs on Sunday at 7pm and focusses on the nation's woodlands.
